Cosmetic Dentistry: White Fillings & Bondings
M. Todd Bonin, DDS |
| “Bonding” is the art and science of repairing/restoring decayed, chipped, misaligned, or discolored teeth with a plastic, tooth colored resin. Dr. Bonin only places bonded fillings that are mercury-free. |
ADVANTAGES: |
- Composite fillings “integrate” with the natural tooth and don’t weaken tooth structures like silver fillings do
- These fillings are more natural and attractive than the old silver alloys
- No risks of mercury allergies
- If they become damaged, they can be easily fixed
- They are temperature and electrical insulators
- Environmentally safe with no hazardous wastes to dispose of
|
DISADVANTAGES: |
- Some insurance companies don’t pay for them or “down-grade” them to a silver alloy fee
- Bonded fillings take longer to do
- Bonded fillings are more expensive to place
- Can stain over time from coffee, tea, and other foods. Alcohol Mouth rinses can “soften” the fillings and decrease longevity
